INTRODUCTION:
The Adult Education Department was bifurcated from the Education (S) Department in 1980 and since then the Department has been functioning separately. The Department has been implementing various Adult Education programmes of Centrally and State sponsored schemes. These schemes have been revised from time to time for the target/age group of 15-35 years and above.
The Department initially took up 6 (Six) projects known as Rural Functional Literacy Projects (RFLP) which was 100 % funded by Central Government Simultaneously, the Department also took up 6 (Six) State Adult Education Projects (SAEP) which was funded by State Government.
Status of illiteracy in the country:
Adult Education in Indian context. extends educational option to those adults, who have lost the opportunity of formal education and transcended the age of formal education, and now feel a need for learning of any type, including, literacy, basic education, vocational education (skill development), equivalency, physical and emotional development, practical arts, applied science, or recreation. The main focus of Adult Education has been on its very bottom tier, which is, 'basic literacy'.
